Therapeutic Art

I’ve spoken about what art is and where we see art and now I’d like to talk about how art has had an effect on me personally.  Everyone knows artists to be these deep emotional kinds of people.  I think the reason why people see artists this way is because every artist in some way uses their art as an outlet.  As Twyla Tharp said “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.”

As I mentioned in my biography my passion for art became much stronger when I entered my teenage years due to unfortunate events that occurred in my life.  It was just about a month after I turned 14 and I found out that my father had stage four throat cancer.  You could only imagine the horrified shock I went into upon hearing this tragic news.  My dad chased monsters from the dark for me, he even checked underneath my bed for me, he could lift me with one arm way up over his head, he pulled splinters from his hand and never even flinched.  To hear that my superman was about to fight the biggest battle of his life was scary but I was going to be by his side through it all.  Once this journey began things got harder and scarier along the way and to be honest the only way I knew how to deal with it was through my art.

Yes I could have cried non-stop or became bitter and angry at the fact that this happened and ask the big question of why?  Why did this have to happen?  Why him?  Though the way I looked at it was, doing any of that wouldn’t have changed anything.  I needed to be strong for my dad just like he had always been for me, so when I did get emotional and I needed to let out my pain or anger I started to draw.  I began to do this on a daily basis.  I would close my eyes take a deep breath and let my hand connect with the paper.  Drawing became therapeutic for me because it enabled me to express my feelings in ways that words could not.

With a new found determination to not only help myself cope with hard times but also the desire to help others carry on through hard times I developed a new dream.  I dreamed to one day create a charitable organization that would incorporate art as a form of therapy with a particular focus on children and teenagers.  For me art has served as a way of getting past challenges and has helped me see the world with a more brighter, colourful outlook, despite the hardships others and I have encountered.  Sometimes it’s the struggles you encounter that enable your life to transform into something beyond normalcy, into what can only be described as wondrous.

I would be more than interested to hear if anyone else has had art impact them in their life in any way may it be big or small.  Please don’t be shy; feel free to leave a comment.

Take A Look Around

Art is All Around You

Have you ever been sitting listening to music and loose yourself in the melody of the song?  Ever become so captivated in a painting that describes all your feelings in a way you yourself could not define?  Have you ever sat in the audience of a play that takes you deep into an unreal fantasy world of which the impossible becomes possible?  I think it’s safe to say that if you have answered yes to any of these questions then you have experienced the arts.

Art is everywhere we look these days and there are attractive, seductive, provoking visuals to lure us into clicking, reading or watching.  Without these temptations, we move right along until something captures our interest.  We see art all the time within different ads; commercials, flyers, billboards even on the sides of our buses.  The right mix of information can cause us to stop dead in our tracks and get us to pay attention.  If we combine that with the right image, we've got a sure winner.  However let's take that one step further: the right combination of words, the right visual and a crisp, clear message - now there is a formula that leads you by the nose down the path of no return.  This is the kind of art that is surrounding you on a daily basis and you've been captured without even consciously choosing to be.  The pull is so powerful that you've lost all awareness, your curiosity driving you deeper and deeper.

If you were to walk down the aisle in any supermarket, take a drive down any major street or spend some time browsing the Internet or flipping through the channels I guarantee you will be bombarded with an endless selection of visual stimuli which is known as art believe it or not.  I feel that every day I witness how effective art grabs us by the throat and forces us to react impulsively based on our innate sense of taste and preference.  Without a moment's hesitation, we either like it or dislike it.  Buy into it or dismiss it entirely.  If you take a moment to look around you right now, what art do you see?  What art have you seen today?  This week or even this month?   I would love to learn about the art you have seen around you, so please leave a comment and let us see if we can prove how art truly is all around us.

Art is...

What is Art?

http://www.concreteinteractive.com/category/articles/
This question pops up again and again within society, and there are so many different answers.  Some say art cannot be defined, do you agree?  It is often said that art is just the process or product of positioning elements in a way that appeals to our senses or emotions.  I’ve heard people define art as a form of expression, including music, literature, film, sculpture and paintings — something that expresses an idea, an emotion or more commonly a worldview. Andy Warhol believed that “Art is anything you can get away with.”

There are those that believe it conveys ideas and values from different cultures and its role changes through time.  I believe that everything I’ve mentioned so far has elements of truth but is mainly opinion.  In all honesty, my point of view of the definition of art is open; it’s subjective, and debatable.  I think that the concept itself has changed over centuries.  The very idea of art resumes today to cause uproar of controversy, due to the fact that there are numerous versions of how people perceive art.

When I see a piece of artwork or create a piece of artwork myself, I feel it is true art when it can cause myself and/or others to stop in their tracks and take a moment to think.  It doesn’t have to be mind blowing, just something that makes them take a few moments out of their crazy hectic schedules and wonder… why did this artist create this?  What are they trying to say?  You know questions of that nature.  So do you viewers agree with any of the views I have stated?  I would love to learn more on how others view art so if you have an opinion or anything you would like to state please do not hesitate to leave a comment!

Mary Catherine D'Agostino: A Bio

Sneak Preview

Art is surrounding us everyday with a unique message behind every piece of work.   I believe that Edgar Degas describes this perfectly in his quote “Art is not what you see but what you make others see.

Hi my name is Mary Catherine D'Agostino I am a first year Sheridan College student in the Advertising and Marketing program.  I have always had a passion for art beginning as a child when I would doodle for fun.  My passion for art became much stronger when I entered my teenage years due to unfortunate events that occurred in my life.  I learned to use art as an outlet and began to grow quiet a skill for it.

This is my first attempt at a blog and I hope that my views on art help open doors for discussion because I would love to learn how others view art, observe art around them or even how art may have affected them in any way at some point in their lives.

Please feel free to drop in anytime and check out my latest posts and express any thoughts you may have.  Let us not forget that “This world is but a canvas to our imagination” – Henry David Thoreau
